With the release of their latest album Silk, Austrian Duo HVOB have just embarked on a European tour which brought their unique light and visual show to 15 European Cities, including a performance at London’s Oval Space on Thursday 27th April. We couldn’t resist an opportunity to catch their latest live show and so we headed down.
Silk is the duo’s third album and it’s the first time that they have collaborated on an LP. For this release they have joined forces with Winston Marshall, a London-based artist, and the result is a very different sound. The album feels darker, less melancholic and one well suited for live performance. Silk is also the first album to be released on HVOB’s own new label Tragen Records.
We arrived to catch the closing performance of David Douglas, who was providing support for the night. HVOB were soon on stage, shrouded by smoke and darkness, they soon made their presence apparent as the stage erupted in light and the duo kicked things off with an edit of one of their signature tracks, ‘Jack’. The crowd welcomed this and the sold out dance floor erupted in a sea of movement and hands launched into the air.
As per previous live performances, the duo opted for a continuous mix of their tracks, making their performance feel much more like a live DJ set. This worked nicely, keeping the mood upbeat and energetic, each piece blending into the next and tracks from their earlier two albums serving as the perfect opener for their latest live show.
Things slowed down when they were joined on stage by Winston Marshall; the ambient guitar riff and Winston’s distinct vocals were instantly recognisable to all in the room as they began to showcase their latest work, starting with the opening track from their album, ‘The Blame Game’. Things quickly picked up again, particularly with their performance of ‘Torrid Soul’ where strobes and percussion worked in synchronicity, bringing the dance floor alive.
The night came to an end as the duo returned to the stage for an encore, closing their performance in exactly the way they started; with edits of their earlier productions and finishing things off with firm favourite, ‘Dogs’.
HVOB delivered a fantastic live show, confirming once again that not only are they masters in the studio, they are also masters of the stage performance.
